In-class assignment for students NOT attending the field trip

The following assignment is for students who are NOT attending the field trip and should be completed during the class period that you would normally see me.

THEREFORE – IT’S NOT HOMEWORK FOR TOMORROW/TUESDAY. IT’S TO BE DONE IN CLASS!!!!

Students should read the following articles:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/poisonedwaters/themes/endocrine.html http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-03-10-drugs-tap-water_N.htm

They should go here: http://www.ncsu.edu/sciencejunction/depot/experiments/water/index.html and read about pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrates/phosphates, and macroinvertebrates.

They should then work in pairs to develop a profile of what they think a healthy water system would be like (temperature, pH, oxygen level, nitrate level and types of macroinvertebrates.) They should also develop a profile of what they think an unhealthy water system would be like.

Extra Credit Opportunities

Students interested in extra credit have one of two options:

  • Play Pandemic 2: http://www.crazymonkeygames.com/Pandemic-2.html
    • Design a virus, bacterium, or parasite and release it on the world.
    • To get extra credit, you must infect MADAGASCAR successfully. Your disease cannot begin in Madagascar.
    • To prove you’ve done this, print/screencap a copy of the “world menu.”
    • This is worth 5 HW/prep points.
  • Read “The Tragedy of the Commons” by Garrett Hardin: http://www.garretthardinsociety.org/articles/art_tragedy_of_the_commons.html
    • Prepare a 5-minute oral summary (give me a head’s up on this) of the essay to present to the class.
    • Other readings will be posted if someone presents this in class.
