The following assignment is for students who are NOT attending the field trip and should be completed during the class period that you would normally see me. (Get laptops from Mr. Null and report to Mr. Christie’s room.)
Students should read the following articles:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/poisonedwaters/themes/endocrine.html
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-03-10-drugs-tap-water_N.htm
They should go here: http://www.ncsu.edu/sciencejunction/depot/experiments/water/index.html and read about pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrates/phosphates, and macroinvertebrates.
They should then work in pairs to develop a profile of what they think a healthy water system would be like (temperature, pH, oxygen level, nitrate level and types of macroinvertebrates.)
They should also develop a profile of what they think an unhealthy water system would be like.

Meet time: 8:15am-8:30am; Push-off: 9:00 am. Arrival back 3:15pm-3:30pm
Metro/Walking Directions
Take the Metro to the Waterfront/SEU station (it’s on the Green Line).
So, to get from the metro to the marina, students will need to:
1-get off at green line’s Waterfront/SEU station
2-at top of escalator do a 180 to face the street, walk to the sidewalk and make a right (on M St.)
3-at the end of the block M St. crosses 6th and becomes Maine Ave. cross 6th, cross M/Maine
4-Maine bends to the right. Continue along Maine until the next cross street. Marina will be on the left. The sign says “The Gangplank Marina” at the top, but the biggest word is Odyssey. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is also on the sign. Enter the parking lot and walk towards the big propeller sticking out of the sidewalk. We’ll be there.
This Metro Stationmasters map is helpful (we’re right next to the Channel Inn, which is marked): http://stationmasters.com/System_Map/WATRFRNT/watrfrnt.html
Driving
As for driving from the city, take Georgia Ave/ 7th street downtown all the way to Water Street. Turn Left on Water street (runs alongside Maine Ave; cross Maine and make immediate left) and the Marina will be about a block down on the right. Parking is available at the Channel in Hotel (to the right side of the marina) for 10-12 dollars or at the Spirit of Washington parking lot further down Water street for $12. Unfortunately we can’t have guests park in the marina parking lot.
